What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?

AR is a computerized reading management program that Lockhart uses as a supplement for the reading curriculum. AR helps you focus attention on careful reading of books, which improves critical thinking skills and build a love for reading.

How does it work?

  • Select a book on your level in the library or from the titles on the AR book list. AR books are labeled with large red dots on the spines.

  • Read the book at your own pace.

  • Take a quiz on the computer to check your comprehension.  Tests are multiple choice featuring 5, 10, or 20 questions.  Each question offers four choices. The computer shows how many questions are answered correctly, shows questions missed along with the correct answers, and awards points providing immediate feedback.. A report is then printed for the teacher and parents.

Where can I find an Accelerated Reader list?

Copies of the list are throughout the library media center, our local network and on our school website. One is also located at East Regional Library Youth Services Desk(across the street from the school).

How do I choose a book?

Pick a book that looks interesting to you.  Read the summary on the back of the book.  Ask other students in your class what books they read and liked.  Ask your librarian and/or teacher for suggestions.  Don't forget that many nonfiction books are also on the AR lists.

How many times can I take a quiz on one book?

You can take the quiz only once!

When and where can I take a quiz?

You take the quiz in your classroom.  Quizzes may also be taken in the library media center.  Remember, once you start a quiz, you cannot stop.

What is wrong if I get 100% on every quiz?

If you are getting 100% every time you take a quiz, you are taking quizzes on books that are too easy.  You are taking quizzes on the right level books when you average around 85% on the quizzes.  If you are getting below 85%, start choosing AR books that are a little easier.

How many AR quizzes should I take?

Each grade level has their own requirements. See your teacher to set goals based on your grade level and reading level.
